Distinguished Nyerere Lecturer Series
Professor Wole Soyinka was installed as the Distinguished Nyerere Lecturer, 2009 in April 2009 during the first Julius Nyerere Intellectual Festival Week held under the Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam. In his lecture, on New Imperialisms, presented in this book, Professor Wole Soyinka, a renowned playwright, novelist, poet and a great writer, explores the multifaceted concepts and practices of imperialism, and relates these to past and present human experiences around the world, including Africa. He takes the reader through the complex terrain of past and present empire building tendencies, while illuminating the accompanying human sufferings. He uses unconventional and creative approaches to understanding the workings of today’s imperialisms and their negative consequences on the majority of humanity. The lecture provokes deep and candid thinking about the future of humanity, especially in Africa.
