Kevin L. Foyle first came to Tanzania in 1962 to teach English at Umbwe Secondary, Kibosho, and he soon began to appreciate the difficulty Kiswahili learners of English experience when choosing certain correct little words which are so much more used in English than in Kiswahili. One of the most well-known is “kuingia katika nyumba” being translated as “to enter into the house” instead of “to enter the house”. In 2000 the author decided to provide an easy to use remedy. The result is Phrasal Verbs, a valuable learning aid designed to fill the gap in this area of English language acquisition It is a collection of sentences (with an East African background as far as practicable) which require the addition of one or two simple works such as to, in, for etc., to complete the meaning. Due to the idiomatic tendency of phrasal verbs, the meaning can change with time, thus the regular updating of this highly popular work (currently in its 4th edition!) and the currently accepted answers provided in the appendix. Teachers at all levels will find it especially helpful in their highly important work of teaching their students to use correct English and it cannot but improve the teaching and use of English in East Africa.
